Bharatanatyam is a classical dance form of India. It is known for detailed hand movements and disciplined footwork. This is an ancient dance form that was
preformed throughout temples in the 19th century.
Bharatanatyam portrays stories from mythology and history. Throughout the
centuries, various styles of Bharatanatyam have originated. It has also been modernized and now also depicts stories and messages pertaining to the current world.
Arangetram literally means 'getting on stage'. A dance arangetram is a debut performance of a dance form given by a student who has trained for many years.
There is no dress code. The host typically wears traditional Indian wear. The guests can wear any comfortable clothes normally worn for a hosted dinner event. Semi-formal or business casual wear is typical in such events. Masks are requested to follow Covid related restrictions.
Your presence is the greatest gift to the hosts. In some events, a non-profit cause is designated by the performer. You may choose to donate to that cause but there is no obligation to do so.
Each dance item is roughly 10 minutes in duration. The "varnam" (centerpiece) is longer - closer to 25 minutes. Overall, expect the program to last about 3 hours.
There are short breaks between dance items. There are two larger breaks for costume changes after 2 to 3 dance items.
